Design Consult | Primary Bedroom | Durham, NC

My good friends were looking to make their primary bedroom feel a bit more special so a few months ago I created a mood board to help guide their design. Since then, they’ve made huge progress and their space looks great!

Today I’m going to recap how I created their design from afar and how they used my design consult deck to transform their space.

Color Palette

To start we aligned on their non-negotiables as far as furniture and linens that should stay in the room. These items included their green velvet curtains, grey bed frame, a white dresser and nightstand set, and a few other décor items. This was a great jumping off point to build the design around. I loved the tone of their green curtains so that became the center point, and then we pulled in neutral tones like beige, brown, black and even rust. I also wanted my color examples to include panel or trim work because I felt that would be a great way to add architectural detail and texture to a newly built house.

Layout

Before I select pieces for the mood board I work through the room layout. Typically I’ll take measurements of everything and then use painters tape to visualize potential new items in the space. Because this was a virtual consult I wasn’t able to measure the space but luckily my friends were able to.

Overall I liked how they had their bed centered between the two large windows and recommended they add a bench or two ottomans at the end of the bed to add dimension. They had one boucle chair in the left corner of the room and an empty wall on the right side so I thought they could move the chair to the empty wall and add a second chair to create a seating area.

Materials

After establishing the color palette and layout, I started pulling materials into a mood board. This included lookalikes of pieces they already owned for staging purposes and new items.

I anchored the space with a rug that pulled in both dark and warm neutral tones. A rug is key in any space but especially in a carpeted bedroom because it visually centers the space and adds dimension to a single tone carpet.

From there I focused on adding texture to the space by bringing in different materials. We started with the grey woven fabric headboard and boucle chair then layered in a metal nightstand, natural wood bench, brass sconce, and a black stained dressed with leather pulls.

In my design notes I shared an idea for how my friends could transform their white wood dresser into more of a statement piece like the one below. I recommended that they cut out the bottom trim which was under the bottom drawers, paint it black, and add some leather hardware. Check out the reveal below to see how it turned out.

Bringing It All Together

I had so much fun pulling together this design consult for my dear friends. And I am so proud of all the DIYing they did to bring this to life. Design is so satisfying when you’re able to execute it yourself. Regardless of if you hire a designer or DIY, it pays off to put your plan on paper. By taking the time to create reference materials or mood boards you slow down and take a more thoughtful approach, taking care to create a space that reflects a feeling.

Before we get to the reveal lets recap my design consult process.

  1. Mood & Color Palette: We’ll talk through how you want your space to feel, how it needs to function, and any colors that you’re drawn to. Don’t worry if you’re unsure how to answer these questions, I’ll help you narrow in on your preferences.

  2. Budget: The most important part of design is establishing boundaries and the budget is a big one. I think good design can fit into any budget and my design consult process reflects that.

  3. Layout: Measure, measure, and measure again. Another design boundary is the size of the space so it’s important we measure before selecting any materials.

  4. Materials: My favorite part is selecting the materials for the space and more often than not is my client’s favorite part too. My design consult deck will always include links to recommended materials along with options at different price points.
